Rekatone’s REXDA award unveiled; moots effort to curb frauds in design, renovation industries



THE Rekatone International Excellence Design Award (REXDA) has been officially unveiled under patronage of Selangor state EXCO for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Hilmi.


This award aims to enhance the quality of services, professionalism and credibility in the interior design and architecture sectors while combating fraudulent activities in these fields to promote sustainable development in the industry.


The award will recognize outstanding individuals and companies in the design and construction fields, while also promoting Malaysia’s high-quality, innovative, and creative design works on the international stage.


Rekatone hopes to achieve the following key objectives through REXDA with the support of the government and various sectors:

  • Promote Malaysia’s development toward global standards;

  • Provide international recognition for designers and architects;

  • Attract overseas talent to contribute to Malaysia’s creative and design development;

  • Encourage innovative ideas;

  • Collaborate with the government to promote ESG (environmental, social and governance) efforts, establish networks and advocate for ESG elements;

  • Eliminate fraud in the design, renovation and real estate sectors to maintain the reputation and accountability of consumers and professionals.


Rekatone aims for REXDA to become an international platform that transforms dreamers into pioneers, concepts into reality, recognises outstanding design works and re-defines possibilities.


In his speech, Najwan revealed that there are currently about 50,000 renovation companies and contractors in Malaysia. However, the industry faces significant challenges with some 1,200 renovation fraud cases reported,


In 2023, they affected around 1,500 victims and resulted in losses of RM50 mil. The Kota Anggerik state assemblyman emphasised that ensuring transparency and accountability in the industry is a collective responsibility.


He further gave thumbs up to the establishment of Rekatone.com which goal is to assist consumers, especially property owners in transacting with honest contractors to ensure they receive quality services at fair prices, thereby pursue an integrity-driven ecosystem by reducing the occurrence of renovation fraud cases.


In his address, Rekatone.com’s founder and CEO Jacky Chuah reiterated Rekatone’s commitment to the development of the interior design and architecture fields.


“As part of Rekatone’s mission, we aim to help and protect the rights of property owners while enhancing the reputation and reliability of interior design professionals to provide high-quality, time-efficient and value-for-money services, especially in a society currently filled with fraudulent activities.”


Meanwhile, Malaysia Proptech Association president Dr Daniele Gambero remarked that the digital solutions provided by Rekatone are transforming project management and renovation processes.


Gambero who is also the REXDA judging panel chairman further pointed out that these solutions prioritise transparency and trust, thus ensuring that all parties involved in renovation projects can collaborate closely and confidently.


“Rekatone’s platform demonstrates how technology can simplify processes, reduce inefficiencies and foster closer relationships among stakeholders,” he envisages.


“From initial planning to final execution, each step is transparent and accessible to all participants. Contractors, consumers and suppliers can communicate in real-time, promptly addressing issues and avoiding costly delays, hence making it easier to deliver projects on time and within budget.”
